CLASSIFICATION: Metal / Architectural Iron
TYPE: Iron Band
ITEM: Fenestrated iron band
MATERIAL: Iron
Photograph 11dpcc0601 by Joseph Lehner.
Drawing by Ben Claasz Coockson.
DESCRIPTION
The greater part of a fenestrated iron band comprising one large piece and three non-joining fragments. There are a minimum of six rectangular fenestrations three of which are sufficiently preserved for their size to be ascertained.
DIMENSIONS
Maximum length of the large portion: 941 mm.
Maximum length of fragments: 209 mm and 83 mm.
CONTEXT
Cappadocia Gate, the main portion was found resting directly on the stone pavement, the other fragments were recovered from the stone collapse.
PUBLICATION
Summers, Cappadocia Gate, Chicago: OIP in press.

DESCRIPTION
Large folded iron band with four circular perforations punched from a single direction. There are no immediately visible forge welds of sections, suggesting that this band was forged from a single piece of iron.
DIMENSIONS
Total unfolded length: 1647 mm.
Width at rounded end: 80 mm.
Width at squared end: 69 mm.
Thickness at rounded end: 8 mm; thickness at squared end: 6 mm.
Distance between perforations: 425 mm.

MATERIAL: Iron

Drawing by Ben Claasz Coockson.
DESCRIPTION
Large folded iron band with four circular perforations punched from the same direction and a dome-headed iron nail held in situ by a small nail inserted from the opposite side. There are no immediately visible forge welds of sections, suggesting that this band was forged from a single piece of iron. Both ends are fastened by the dome-headed nail the lower portion of which is bent at 90 degrees so that it is parallel with the band. The small nail inserted from the other side secured the larger one. The band has been bent, as though fitted around a post in such a way that the burrs that were formed when the holes were punched were on the outer face. One end has been hammered and given a rounded shape whereas the other end has been cut straight from both sides.
DIMENSIONS
Total unfolded length: 1602 mm.
Width at rounded end: 68 mm.
Width at squared end: 56 mm.
Thickness at rounded end: 5 mm.
Thickness at squared end: 6 mm.
Distance between perforations: 381 mm.
Diameter of perforations: 11 to 12 mm.
CONTEXT
Cappadocia Gate, collapse in near part of the central passage.
PUBLICATION

Drawing by Ben Claasz Coockson.
DESCRIPTION
Bent iron band with four circular perforations punched from the same direction with four in situ dome-headed iron nails. The metal is nearly completely mineralized and broken into several pieces. Remnant corrosion makes some measurements imprecise. The nails do not go through two perforations probably suggesting that although the band was purposefully folded it was attached with four nails rather than two. There are wooden pseudomorphs preserved in places.
DIMENSIONS
Total unfolded length: 880 mm.
Width at rounded end: 54 mm.
Width at squared end: 56 mm.
Thickness at rounded end: 6 mm.
Thickness at squared end: 4 mm.
Distance between perforations: circa 110 to 130 mm.
The dome-headed nails are square in section, measurable lengths: 87 and 74 mm. Diameter of heads: 15 and 22 mm.
CONTEXT
Cappadocia Gate, collapse in near part of the central passage.
