Finds

The test trenches produced the same range of pottery as that discovered by Schmidt (1929, 259-64). In addition, a small number of status objects were recovered from the north-western block. Most noteworthy was the exquisitely carved ivory furniture inlay (Fig. 6), 29cm long (Korolnik 1997). The freeze depicts a doe with its head lowered facing left, opposed by a billy-goat followed in turn by a she-goat, a ewe and a ram. Double drill holes in the doe once contained enamel, presumably brightly coloured, and the fleeces of the sheep are skilfully depicted by circles. The row of animals stands on a meander and a row of bead and reel forms the top. Gold leaf covers the ivory reels and parts of the animals. The beads are amber backed by squares of reflective sliver. Fixing holes are extant at either end. This unique piece shows western influence and was perhaps a Lydian piece made in Sardis.
