The project comes under the auspices of the British Institute at Ankara (BIAA) and is provided with facilities in Turkey but does not qualify for funding. In Ankara the Middle East Technical University provides project offi ce space for research and publication work all year round while in Chicago at the Oriental Institute post-fi eldwork is directed by Scott Branting.
We remain deeply indebted to the people of Şahmuratlı Village, Headman Osman Muratdağı, now retired, and his successor Turan Baştürk, for extending traditional Anatolian hospitality. Mehmet Erciyas, the Kerkenes Guard, has gone beyond the call of duty in the assumption of his responsibilities.
